ABC Cooking Studio, a wildly popular women-only cooking school in Japan, opened its first Shanghai branch in Joy City. I originally came across the studio when I was window shopping in Tokyo Midtown at Roppongi, and remember well the brightly-lit, colorful interior filled with well-groomed, apron-clad Japanese ladies looking like busy bees. When I saw that the Shanghai branch is offering a trial class for only 50 RMB, I immediately called to schedule an appointment.

A friend and I arrived 10 minutes before our 3:00pm class, changed into indoor slippers, put on the aprons, and were ready to go.

The class we signed up for included instructions for two types of bread – a cinnamon roll and a ham mayonnaise roll. All the ingredients we needed were already measured and placed on our work station. No fuss. There were some other classes going on at the same time and it was fun to see what other people were making – pizza, heart-shaped sponge cake, coffee roll, etc.

After some mixing and kneading, I turned all of the above into this:

Since I couldn’t take many photos during the prepping process, let’s fast forward to the oven:

Both rolls turned out satisfactory, though I’ve definitely made better cinnamon rolls at home with my own recipe.

Cleaning up after class.

The picture below shows some of the classes that are taught at ABC Cooking Studio Japan. Since the Shanghai branch just opened, class offering is very limited (check the website for more information). The trial class I signed up for (50 RMB for 2 types of breads) is already over, but the studio has other trial classes until the end of February (30 RMB for 1 type of bread/cake/dish). ABC Cooking Studio is not for the serious cooks/bakers, but if you are looking to spend the afternoon, this might be a fun option.
