Song Fang Maison de Thé is an enchanting tea salon located in a converted former French Concession lane house. From the 1st floor retail space, climb up the winding wooden staircase to arrive at its bright and airy tea salon adorned with vintage tin cans, wicker chairs, and nostalgic floral red prints from Northern China – you probably wouldn’t have guessed that this place is opened by a French lady, would you? With light jazz floating in the background, this is a truly stylish retreat.

Song Fang has an extensive selection of Chinese and French tea. My favorite is Polynesie (48 RMB), a fruity blend of green tea with mango, banana, and pineapple, but I also love China Blue (60RMB), a rich and creamy blend of white tea with coconut, blackberry, and orange. Moonlight (50 RMB), green tea with red fruits, tropical fruits and flowers, is also an excellent choice.

Song Fang also offers a few homemade French cakes (40~45 RMB), financiers (42 RMB for two), assorted cookies (35 RMB), and ice-cream (42 RMB). I tried a piece of their rich, chocolate pate-like cake, quite a nice accompaniment to the fruity tea I ordered. It also came with two homemade cookies – a pleasant surprise.

The ceiling of the 2nd floor is decorated with bird cages. Cute and creative.

If you are looking for a place to spend a quiet afternoon, try Song Fang. You will not want to leave after a sip of their soothing tea.

  1. Love this blog!! it’s soooo cool and absolutely want to go to some places you’ve listed here…when i’m in shanghai :)

  2. It would be perfect if it’s as quiet as in the photo, I would try Chinese tea like tieguanyin and play FIFA there.

  3. just go there today with my husband for afternoon tea. the tea is great though a bit expensive but most of them are very reasonable. the banana cake is good but for 45 bucks a piece that is sooooooo expensive. the green tea cake is not good. will come again but just for the tea since they are the only one that have African tea ( decaf ) in shanghai that i know of.
