I’ve known about Rumors Coffee since they opened on Hunan Road five years ago, and though I never ventured inside, I’ve always been intrigued by this tiny Japanese cafe that serves only hand dripped coffee. They opened a second location on Xingguo Road just over a year ago, and upon my return from Paris, I finally paid this place a visit…and what a charmer it is!

其實早在五年前,魯馬滋在湖南路上開了第一家店時我就注意到它了。雖然沒進去過,卻一直對這家小小的日式手沖咖啡店感到莫名的興趣。一年多前他們在興國路開了二店,而我趁著從巴黎搬回上海這個機會,拜托朋友介紹了我認識咖啡店的老板中山先生和中山太太。一去,就完全喜歡上這個地方了。

Before opening this shop, Keiichi Nakayama had a corporate job in Tokyo and travelled to Shanghai from time to time for work. Liking what he saw, he decided to move here with his Shanghainese wife, and together the two of them started their first cafe in 2011 to bring good hand dripped coffee to this city.

開咖啡店之前,中山先生在東京做著一般上班族的工作,偶爾會來上海出差。因爲喜歡咖啡,因爲喜歡上海,他和中山太太決定搬來這裏,兩個人一起開了專做手沖咖啡的魯馬滋。順帶一提,中山太太是上海人,說話非常溫柔,有機會找她聊聊天,心情會很好哦。

Overtime, they accumulated a steady client base, and the Xingguo branch was born. While I like the coziness of the first shop, I prefer the second location for its copious use of windows and skylights, which bring in plenty of natural light. On the few occasions I’ve visited, the atmosphere is always delightful, and the air filled with aroma of freshly ground coffee and light-hearted jazz.

經過幾年的努力,中山夫婦累積了不少忠實顧客,便在興國路上開了二店。跟小巧溫馨的一店比起來,二店更寬敞更明亮,我非常喜歡這裏大片的窗戶和天窗設計,充足的自然光讓整個空間充滿了空氣感。這裏的氣氛輕松愉快,隨時都飄著新鮮研磨的咖啡豆香氣和輕輕的爵士樂。

All the coffee beans at Rumors Coffee at roasted in house. They arrive raw in bags as shown below, and are roasted according to bean variety and Mr. Nakayama’s personal preference.

對了,魯馬滋的咖啡豆都是中山先生親自(邊聽爵士樂邊)烘培的。如照片所示,咖啡豆到這裏時都是生豆,中山先生會根據品種和個人喜好,做出適度的烘焙。

I visited on a particularly quiet morning, and was lucky to have the cafe owner himself behind the bar to brew me coffee, which doesn’t happen everyday now as he spends a lot of time roasting beans behind the scenes.

中山先生平時不一定會出現在吧台後,不過我選擇在一個安靜的平日上午造訪魯馬滋,很幸運的有他親自爲我煮了兩杯咖啡。噢,開心。

It all starts with weighing the coffee beans and grinding them fresh to order.

首先,從量咖啡豆,然後新鮮研磨開始。

Then, he slowly pours hot water (85-90°C) over ground coffee. For my cup of Ethiopia Yirg-Cheffe, he suggested using the cloth filter, which allows more oil to pass through than does the paper filter, resulting in a clean yet full-bodied cup.

接著,中山先生緩緩的用85-90度之間的熱水將咖啡粉浸濕。我點的這杯是耶加雪菲G1,而他建議我試試用濾布衝泡這款咖啡。跟他聊過後才知道,和濾紙相比,濾布不會過濾掉全部的油脂,煮出的咖啡口感相對較飽滿。倒沒有說哪一種比較好,完全是看個人喜好。

In between the pouring and waiting process, Mr. Nakayama also warms the coffee cup with hot water. Small detail that matters.

在沖煮咖啡的同時,中山先生用熱水溫了等會兒要使用的咖啡杯。很小的動作,卻可從此看到他的用心。

Et voilà, a cup of meticulously brewed Ethiopia Yirg-Cheffe (60 RMB). Bright acidity, sweet lemon flavor with a floral finish. A relatively light, very easy to drink.

第一杯耶加雪菲G1(60元),類似山莓的酸甜口感,芬芳怡人,是非常順口的一款咖啡。

On another note, there are some beautiful cups and plates at Rumors Coffee, all hand carried back from Japan. Mr. Nakayama showed me this series of cups with beautiful gold and silver finishings, especially made for him by a craftsman of his acquaintance…and I got to use one of these cups for my next brew! Totally doing my happy dance.

話說,魯馬滋的美麗咖啡杯盤們都是老板夫婦從日本手提回來的。中山先生特別讓我看了一組由認識的手工藝師傅爲他特制的咖啡杯,銀色和金色的細節非常漂亮。我的下一杯咖啡,居然能用這麽特別的器皿品嚐,我偷偷的在心裏手舞足蹈了一番。

Kenya AA (60 RMB), brewed with paper filter for an even cleaner flavor. Full body, citrus notes of grapefruit, sweetness of berries, clean finish (yes I copied this from their menu).

肯尼亞 AA(60元),一款有柔和葡萄柚酸味和莓果細微甘甜的咖啡,這次選擇使用濾紙沖泡,味道非常乾淨。

On my way out, I noticed that Rumors Coffee also sells these filter coffee bags. Something to consider for those who are looking for a convenient way to do pour-over coffee at home.

魯馬滋也有提供挂耳試咖啡包,想要在家裏方便做出手沖的人,可以考慮一下。

Sitting at the bar, sipping on a soothing cup of coffee, chatting with Mr. Nakayama about this and that, with light jazz in the air and sun pouring in from the windows…what a morning. This place gets busy in the afternoons especially on weekends, so I guess you are more likely to find me here on weekday mornings, when I can enjoy my coffee moment in peace and quiet.

坐在吧台,啜著咖啡,和中山先生閑聊著天,空氣裏除了有咖啡香,還有悅耳的爵士樂和透過窗戶進來的柔和陽光…這個早晨,太美好。魯馬滋在下午時比較忙碌,所以我應該總是會選擇在平日的上午來訪吧。下周二,約嗎?
