The PuLi Hotel & Spa, gorgeously designed with grey bricks, bamboo screens, and elegant antiques placed in seemingly haphazard ways, is one of my favorite hotels in Shanghai. It is centrally located between Nanjing West Road and Yan’An Road, yet it holds its own as a center of calm in the dizzying Shanghai cityscape. An urban resort indeed.

The sunken reception area is thoughtfully designed so that the standing receptionists are at eye-level with sitting guests. A small but important detail. Behind it, a 32-meter Long Bar offers one of Shanghai’s “longest” wine and champagne selections by the glass.

The library, very zen.

On a side note, apparently the lotus flowers in the entire hotel are changed DAILY. Must be a very costly feat…

The patio right outside the lobby area would be perfect for a lazy afternoon or late night drinks.

While you are here, pamper yourself with a Thai Herbal Compress Treatment at Anantara Spa. It’s a sensorial experience that will transport you to a different state of mind. Click here to see my post on the treatment.

The pool also looks very nice…

Jing’An, the hotel’s signature restaurant, has made quite a name for itself. I’ve been there for brunch and dinner, and am very tempted to go back again to try more dishes by chef Dane Clouston.

Meeting room.

And now, the tastefully designed and decorated rooms.

Windows from wall to wall, love it.

The TV turns 270 degrees so you can watch it in the shower too.

Pre-paid cellphone with numbers all punched in. Very considerate.

Nespresso machines and free mini-bar in all the rooms.

Very charmed by the understated elegance and considerate touches at the PuLi. Now just let me move in already.

  2. hi! thanks so much, it’s very kind of u! :) i’ll actually be in shanghai tmr! and i have reservations at goga and mr & mrs bund for dinner, and jesse for lunch. thinking of also doing el willy/tenya/la creperie for the other meals, and cafe dan/whisk/hof for coffee desserts. wld appreciate if u cld recommend 2 brunch places out of these 4 (madison, cafe con leche by azul, boxing cat or maya) for the 2 weekend days i have? thank u i wld really appreciate it! and of cuz hearing ur other faves wld be great too! :) x

    1. The list you have right now is good – goga, mr and mrs bund, and jesse are all great choices. Cafe dan is a must visit in my opinion, it’s such a cute and cozy place, make sure to order their iced latte (though it’s getting a little cold now). For brunch, I’d go to Madison, but not so sure about the other three…I’ve been to all of them but wasn’t especially blown away. Why not try Jean Georges brunch?

  3. it’s ok no worries! thanks for replying anyway :) i’m actually back from my trip already, loved goga, tenya, el coctel and mr&mrs bund (poor service though!). cafe dan was quite nice too – but oh dear tianzifang on a sat afternoon is crazy!! i tried JG’s lunch on a separate trip so tt’s why i ruled it out. went to boxing cat in the end for brunch, not bad too cuz we loved the burger! btw if u ever visit singapore, let me know and i will give you reccs! :)
