The bed at Simon Says is ultra comfortable. The only thing that lured me out of it was the enticing aroma of freshly baked croissants and freshly brewed coffee from the downstairs cafe. When breakfast smells this good, sleeping in simply is not an option.

The cafe

At the cafe, we were greeted by Christopher and Vache the B&B cat. Vache is “cow” in French – just look at his fur and you’ll know why this name is so befitting.

Breakfast at Simon Says is a feast. Freshly squeezed orange juice, amazing croissants (I’d say one of the best I’ve ever had) and other pastries (the chocolate ones are scrumptious), perfectly boiled eggs (so soft so tender), plain yogurt, organic museli, fresh cherries, and of course, luxurious coffee.

Christopher also gave us a platter of ham, salami, and seaweed cheese (a local specialty) with a bowl of whole grain bread. I turned those into nice little open-faced sandwiches and into the stomach they went.

The Ghent USE-IT guide says to get a slice of carrot cake from Simon Says, so I happily obliged. Cakes for breakfast? Any day.

To finish, a cup of black coffee.

And this whole time, Christopher kept saying: “if you need anything else, just shout” – as if he hasn’t already showered enough food on us!

Breakfast, light lunch, afternoon tea!

Christopher and Simon are truly hospitable hosts who genuinely want you to feel right at home. Staying at Simon Says is nothing short of a delightful experience. It’s all in the details.

  1. [...] After a late night stroll around the beautiful city center, we passed out in the comfortable beds. The only problem was a mosquito buzzing around in the room, and some minor noise from the streets (earplugs can be found in the drawer), but we had a good night’s sleep anyway and woke up to a sunny Ghent morning. Breakfast time! [...]
