Tell me, does the following description not make you want to immediately make a reservation at the Plateau Spa at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong?

“Living the spa life is not only possible at the Plateau Spa at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, it’s encouraged. So don’t just book for an hour or three; make it an overnighter. The Plateau’s 14 spa residential rooms have futons, low and minimalist furniture, and a glass-sided infinity bath for two. You could settle in for an in-room massage, then soak in the bath and wake up to a healthy, alfresco breakfast on the balcony or outside under the trees.” (via)

Yes, very much so.

Grand Hyatt Hong Kong

The landscaping at Plateau Spa – complete with fountains, pools, and a waterfall – form a peaceful oasis. The environment is perfect for a quiet escape, whether you are staying for the night at one of the elegantly decorated residential spa rooms, or are in it just for a few hours of day spa treatment – both will transport you to another state of mind.

Treatment room

Upon entering the soothingly scented treatment room, a sense of relaxation settles. The hustle and bustle of Hong Kong? Out of sight, out of mind.

Evian Spa at Three on the Bund is Evian‘s first and only spa outside of France, so naturally I was quite curious to see what it’s like. Upon entering Evian Spa’s 35 metre high atrium, with its zen garden-like decor of grey carpet and large granite rocks, it’s not difficult to image its glory when it first opened 7 years ago. Now, however, the space seems quite worn, and I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed especially after having been to some newer spas in town like ESPA at The Ritz-Carlton Pudong and Anantara Spa at The PuLi Hotel. I soon found out, however, that what Evian Spa lacks in hardware is made up for by the professionalism of their very experienced spa therapists.

At the waiting area, I was served a cup of hot tea and of course, Evian water.

What does it take to be included in “Conde Nast Traveler Hot List Spas 2011“? Let’s find out by visiting The Ritz-Carlton Spa by ESPA, the one and only spa in Shanghai that made the list.

The decor at ESPA is clean and modern with crisp lines, dramatic angles, and Art Deco finishings. The entire place is done in white, but soft yellow lighting makes the space warm and welcoming.

At the reception, a pot of soothing tea and a simple questionnaire.

A trip to Bali wouldn’t be complete without spa. The wide range of choices might seem overwhelming as each hotel has their own spa specialties, and countless independent spa salons also offer a myriad of treatments.  The Mandara Spa at Nikko Resort would be a safe and affordable choice if you don’t know where to go. We went for their signature Balinese massage (reserved in advance through email), which is around 1 hour and 20 minutes of gentle and attentive pampering within the hushed havens of private villas, for 80USD. Highly recommended.

After ice-cold towels and chilled ginger tea at the reception, we were presented with four different blends of essential oils – Mandara, Island Spice, Harmony, and Tranquility – each having its specific aroma-therapeutic function. I settled on the Mandara.

There is a total of eight private villas, all designed with lush tropical foliage and water fountains. Though the villa is open-air, the treatment area is covered and set behind high stone walls so there is no worry about privacy. Once inside the villa, we changed into robes (more like a thin sheet of cloth) and paper underwear provided by Mandara Spa.

The Balinese massage package includes a foot massage, a floral bath, and a full body massage. The foot massage began with a warm floral foot bath, followed by a gentle scrubbing using sea salt. The massage is then completed with your choice of essential oil – lavender, peppermint, or lemon grass.
