We popped our heads into Little Creatures, and were instantly stunned by its sheer size. This massive concrete-and-steel warehouse has 260 seats in total, and in all imaginable permutations too: bar stools, high tables for two, spacious booths, and long communal tables. What people come here for are the beer (there are no spirits and only a limited wine list) and the food, which involved some all-time favorites like pizza, fish & chips and nachos, as well as some Australian specialties like grilled kangaroo. Despite its size, this ultra popular beer hall is often packed and does not take reservations, so be prepared to line up should you come on a weekend evening.

Yes yes, I know the Great Ocean Road is for tourists, but I am a tourist after all. We drove along the beautiful route, stopped randomly to marvel at the gorgeous blue, munched down some fish and chips with ginger beer, watched the sun set over the 12 apostles, then, when it’s completely dark, star-gazed in the fields next to a pack of cows (more details on this later..)

And yes, it was a wonderful, wonderful day.

“Tea drinking” wasn’t on my itinerary for Melbourne – I mean, this city is known for its thriving coffee culture, not tea brewing – but when we passed by Storm in a Teacup on a late afternoon, we were so drawn to its cute storefront that we just had to go in for a look…

It’s a small place, with no more than 10 seats at the bar and only 2 tables near the back. We sat ourselves down at the bar and began to peruse the extensive tea menu. Black tea, green tea, white tea from all corners of the globe: China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Hawaii, Australia, South Africa, Kenya, India and Sri Lanka. They’ve also got some modern twists, like bubble tea, frappes, and cocktails…and if you must, there are even a couple of filter coffee options from 5 Senses. But you are at a tea bar, so why not try the tea?

I’m actually not too crazy about chocolates and chocolate desserts (gasp, did I really just admit that?), but I still found myself standing at a Max Brenner boutique and utterly disoriented about what to order…Waffles drizzled with pure chocolate? Chocolate mountain cupcake? Chocolate pizza with a crunch? Chocolate souffle? Dreamy chocolate cloud? My gosh, life is tough.

*Various locations available. Check website for details.

But first, here’s a short blurb on Max Brenner. This popular chocolate boutique chain was founded in Israel (yes, Israel, not the U.S. and not Australia) in 1996 and now has stores in Israel, the U.S., Australia, Singapore, and the Philippines. What you can expect to find here: a wide range of chocolates, chocolate beverages, chocolate desserts, and other chocolate-related items – all in a warm interior colored in…chocolate.

At the recommendation of the staff, we ordered a Tutti-Frutti Waffle (14.00AUD/one, 18.50AUD/two) to share. What it is: warm belgian waffles drizzled with pure melted chocolate, served with ice-cream (choice of chocolate or vanilla), fresh strawberries, and bananas…a combination that’s hard to disappoint. Though the waffles were not as good as the ones I had in Seoul, they were satisfying and I imagine quite irresistible for those with a chocolate craving.

My first meal in Melbourne, curiously, was Malaysian food. A local friend asked whether I’d like to try Coconut House (馬來大排擋), apparently the best Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant in Melbourne, and I thought…why not?

As it was still early for dinner, we were seated right away, though I heard this popular restaurant is usually very packed during prime hours. What we had: Traditional Curry Laksa (8.60AUD), Hainanese Chicken Rice (7.60AUD), and Hot Teh Tarik (milk tea, 2.90AUD). I quite liked the laksa, a fiery coconut-based curry soup laden with bean curd puffs, fish sticks, eggplant, bean sprouts, seafood, vermicelli, and a thick egg noodle. This bowl is super rich and intense, so I recommend sharing this among two people and order something else on the side.
