[Tokyo] Hiyoko ひよこ饅頭

Categories tokyo9 Comments

A popular Japanese chick-shaped snack originally invented in Kyushu in 1912. What it is – a thin, soft pastry shell wrapping sweet lima bean paste with a consistency similar to egg yolks. This treat is simple and delicious, perfect with a cup of hot tea!

Unwrapping the packaging reveals the chick-shaped cake. Cute? Cute!

  1. Japan has always excelled themselves with presentation. My Japanese friend returned from his annual trip back home and gave me items from Japan – from the wrapping paper, to how it was wrapped, to what was inside – all were carefully constructed to convey a message. I loved it. The gifts were so thoughtful – I still have them sitting on my bedside table!

  2. Can these be purchased in the United States. My neighbor gave us some. We would like to order some. We went to the site, however the online store was in Japanese.
