The Waterhouse at South Bund is a 19-room boutique hotel where Table No. 1, one  of my recent favorite lunch spots in Shanghai, is located. The design is spare and chic in the unusual way of broken tiles, exposed bricks, rough edges, and plenty of rust. Complete with eclectic furnishings and random phrases written haphazardly on the floors and the windows, The Waterhouse design is undoubtedly one of the most unique in town.

Right across the street from The Waterhouse is a man-made beach installed by the government. The charge is 20 RMB and no food and drinks are to be brought in – next door neighbor Greek restaurant Mythos will be handling the snack bar. I personally am not a big fan of the view (Blocks of apartments? And those hideous ferries!), and am curious to see how this spot will fare as the weather becomes more pleasant.

  1. I thought Waterhouse was a restaurant at first – guess not… I absolutely am dumbfounded by the architecture btw. It’s my favourite kind – minimalist with a quirk :D

    1. Yes I love the architecture and interior design as well.
You should go check it out, even if you don’t eat the restaurant.
I don’t think they stop you from touring the place..

  2. There’s a rooftop bar at The Waterhouse. Nice during the evenings, especially if there’s a riverside breeze. I had some type of special potato chips and dip while there — which seemed really over-priced. Drinks were good. Any idea how much the rooms are in The Waterhouse? If reasonable, I may recommend to visitors for the design alone.
