W Barcelona is more than just a stylish place. It’s got this pulse, an energy that permeates the air, so contagious that the moment you step in, you can’t help but think: “ah yes, I’m at the right place.” And there are more than enough reasons to stay a while – the sun-soaked terrace peering out over sparkling Mediterranean Ocean, modern rooms furnished with ultra-plush beds and panoramic sea/city views, vibrant lounges with delicious cocktails plus the right mix of music…Oh, and it’s the only hotel in Barcelona that has direct beach access. Now beat that.

Designed by renowned Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, W Barcelona has a sail-shaped exterior – very befitting of its beachfront location – and the nautical theme continues inside. Looking up from the lobby, one gets the sense of being under the sea, with sand-colored carpets to the left, and glittering walls as shimmering waves. And what do the transparent, convoluted coffee tables look like? Jellyfish.

W Hotel is the new hip spot in Taipei City. The 39th W Hotel globally, W Taipei opened just shy of 2 months ago on Valentine’s day. What is the big deal? Described as “a sensational swirl of high-energy interiors, vivid design, cutting-edge technology and uniquely modern amenities to fulfill every wish”, W Taipei is also the only hotel in the city with a panoramic view of the Taipei 101, the 2nd tallest building in the world.

Let’s roll the pictures.

The 1st floor features a dramatic installation of metal sticks as “clouds” and the blue dots on the floor as “raindrops”, inspired by the rainy weather in Taipei. On the wall is an interactive installation, “To Light You Fade” created by rAndom International, which lights up according to your movements in front of it.

The purple “target” at the elevator…does it suck you in?

The reception located on the 10th floor.

The concierge desk. Whatever, whenever.

We first stopped by the WOOBAR, which is quite empty during the day packs up as darkness sets in the city.

WOOBAR ice latte.

Though the weather wasn’t too pretty on the day I visited, the outdoor pool (officially called “WET” instead of the pool) is still quite the sweet spot. It would be sexier if the buildings on the background weren’t so ugly.

Spots of green and yellow and an expanse of blue pop out from the overall grey color scheme.

Lazy chairs by the poolside.

We then headed upstairs to check out a “Fabulous Room” and a “Marvelous Suite”. The two look very similar in terms of decor, but the Marvelous Suite is of course larger in size and has more partitions. At the entrance is a red rabbit from W Taipei’s signature W Zodiac Animal – a whimsical touch.

The living room. That decorative piece on the wall is supposedly…an abstract shape of Taiwan?

Work station with a leather ergonomic chair. Taipei 101 in the backdrop.

The signature ultra-comfortable W Bed with its 350-thread count linens. Loving the green carpet.
