When looking for simple and comforting food (especially something soupy when it’s cold outside), Sanukiya always comes to mind. I first blogged about this udon specialty restaurant almost 6 months ago, and have gone back quite a few times since then.

My favorite at the moment is 肉おろしぶっかけうどん nikku osroshi bukkake udon (€14), which is udon with beef, half-cooked egg, and grated white radish. The dry udon is served with a dashi broth on the side. Pour and mix, simply delicious.

They say the best way to judge whether a Japanese restaurant is authentic or not is to check if the staff and the clientele are both Japanese (though I suppose this is true for any cuisine). In the case of Sanukiya, a small udon and rice bowl shop near metro Pyramides, the answer is yes and yes!

On my first visit, I tested the water with a 天ぷらうどん tempura udon (€15). Chewy noodles, light broth, with two pieces of tempura shrimps. Simple, but very comforting.

Here’s a friend’s カツ丼 katsudon (€14), rice topped with fried pork cutlet and eggs. Didn’t steal a bite this time, but it certainly looked very appetizing.

One of the best things to devour on a hot humid summer day like this is a refreshing bowl of cold udon noodles. While I couldn’t find somewhere as bright and airy as Taipei’s Tomitamaya, I did manage to spot a place with authentic udon: TAYA Japanese Restaurant. The interior and decor are nothing to sing about, but the udon noodles are the draw here.

On a hot summer day like this, what’s better than a bowl of ice cold udon noodles for lunch?

Tomitamaya 富玉屋 is a recently opened udon specialty restaurant behind Sogo BR4, ran by a Taiwanese man who has learned the trade during his 15 years of residence in Japan. The decor is simple and clean, with wooden tables and colored seating mats that add warmth to an otherwise very plain space.
