Similar to Laguna, Conrad would be an excellent and affordable choice if you choose not to spend money on something as expensive as Alila Villas Uluwatu and Bulgari Resorts. What I love most about the Conrad is Infinity, a gorgeous modern wedding venue, floating two meters above sea level with the beachfront as its backdrop. There was a wedding going on when we visited, and it seems like the venue is fully booked for the whole day. Given how beautiful the setting is, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’d have to wait months to get off the wait list.

The rest of Conrad is also meticulously designed in contemporary Balinese aesthetics and overall appears more modern than Laguna. Each of the 360 guestrooms and suites overlook the ocean, lagoons, resort or gardens. An interesting thing I noticed is that there are more Asians (read: Japanese) at the Conrad and more Caucasians at the Laguna. Just FYI.

Alila Villas Uluwatu and Bulgari Resorts are without a doubt on top of my list for accommodations in Bali, but if they are over your budget, there are some other 5-star hotels with more affordable prices. Laguna Resort & Spa, a Starwoods property, is one option. Conveniently located in Nusa Dua along with numerous other quality hotels, Laguna is characterized by an abundance of sparkling lagoons and tropical gardens.

Laguna is designed in the contemporary Balinese style. The lobby is especially magnificent with the lofty ceilings and open-air space. Upon arrival, we were promptly served with ice-cold towels and our welcome drinks, which were especially refreshing after a 6-hour plane ride.

The Laguna property is quite vast and contains numerous lagoons in various sizes, complete with day beds and gazebos here and there. You can easily spend days here with friends or with a book, relaxing on the daybeds or soaking in the pool. The guest rooms, however, seem a little dated though the website says they are ‘newly refurbished’.
