I know, I know, you didn’t come to Paris to eat pizza, but once in a while we all get a bit tired of French food and need a change of scene. On one such evening, I happened to pass by La Briciola, a small pizzeria that’s known to fire up one of the best Neapolitan pies in town…

The combination of delicious pizzas with affordable prices makes La Briciola a very popular place. Reserve, or come early.

D.O.C. Pizza & Mozzarella Bar is a simple place. The storefront is bare and the decor is minimal, but owner Tony Nicolini, who is apparently the granddaddy of artisan pizza in Melbourne, has struck the right cord with his brilliant pies. We arrived at 10pm on a weekday evening and the place was still boisterous, with customers filling up every table in the house and a swarm of Italian men in the kitchen busy shoving pizzas in and out of the oven. We knew we were at the right place.

Within walking distance from Sinsa-dong is Apgujeong, another sleek and stylish neighborhood filled with upscale boutiques, shops, cafes, and restaurants. As we made our way over to Le Cafe for a friend’s birthday dinner, we stumbled upon quite a few chic spots, all very picture-worthy. It’s too bad that I never had a chance to come back here during the day before leaving Seoul – I’ll have to save this for my next trip.

Here’s Gorilla in the Kitchen, a popular restaurant owned by Korean celebrity Bae Yong-Joon 裴勇俊 (a.k.a. Yon-sama).

a Côté, literally “next door”, is a small pizzeria by ~~Franck Pecol from the neighboring Franck Bistro and Le Petit Franck~~ (see update below). The short menu, scrawled in French on a piece of wooden plaque, consists of 10 Marseille-style pizzas and nothing else (though a green salad is available upon request). There’s no novelty here. It’s simple, and it’s good.

2014 update: Just got word that a Côté is no longer associated with Franck. I wonder who is in charge now?

For lunch, two of us shared the Royale (120 RMB), a gorgeous tomato sauce-based pie generously topped with mushrooms, ham, olives, and cheese. The crust is thin just the way I like it, and pulling one piece away from the pizza dish is not an elegant affair as the pie disintegrates. Juicy, greasy, messy, totally satisfying.
