In Melbourne’s quirky and bohemian Prahan neighborhood sits The Cullen, a daring and unique hotel named after one of Australia’s most collected contemporary artists, Adam Cullen. From the architecture to the interior design of individual rooms, each part of the hotel has been influenced by Cullen’s famously controversial artwork. Its motto? Live fearlessly.

Here are the reception and foyer areas, both featuring some of Cullen’s original pieces. Upon checking-in, I was given a map that outlines some fun shops and restaurants in Prahan, which is a really fun neighborhood to explore. Just diagonal across from The Cullen is the vibrant Prahan Market (where Market Lane Coffee is), and Chapel Street (great for food and shopping) is only a few minutes away. Very charming.

For those who, like myself, prefer smaller boutique hotels over large hotel chains, The Hatton would be an excellent choice for lodging when traveling in Melbourne. This 20-room hotel, located in the pleasant South Yarra neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle of the city center (but easily accessible via tram), is uniquely charming. A renovation in 2000 restored the 1902 building to its original splendor while adding contemporary comfort and style: High ceilings, wide corridors, windows to let in natural light, and exquisite decors throughout the establishment…This is a truly stylish retreat.

I checked in at the front lounge, a bright and airy space that also double functions as a breakfast room and cafe. Magazines, newspapers, and an iPad are available for guests to use, plus complimentary wireless! This is apparently quite rare in Australia and I really, really appreciated it.
