Please note that this is an arranged tasting, so my experience is possibly more positive than a regular visit.

Exactly as the pictures depict, Yucca is anything but subtle. This small cocktail lounge is dramatic with shocking color blocks, elaborate geometric mosaic floor, bar stools in fuchsia and bright yellow, candelabras, Catholic crucifixes, and the likes. The decor is an attraction in itself, and when paired with house special cocktails and bar bites, Yucca makes for an ideal spot for those looking for a theatrical night.

From Yucca’s tequila-focused cocktail list, I chose the house special Mexican Mule (65 RMB), a playful variation of the Moscow Mule made with Sauza blanco tequila, freshly squeezed lime juice, passion fruit, NZ Manuka honey, cucumber, ginger beer. Do know that I’m not a cocktail connoisseur – I usually just like whatever that tastes fruity and not very strong – but the Mexican Mule seemed like an easy pleaser (for girls, at least).

Tel: 6289-6889
Hours: [Mon-Fri] 5pm-12am [Sat-Sun] 11am-12am

Price: [Dinner] 200~250 RMB/person, [Brunch] 80~150 RMB/person

Huevos huevos huevos! Brunch at Maya is all about the eggs, or “happy farm-grown free range eggs”, as highlighted on their menu. Having little knowledge of Mexican food, I am no judge to decide whether Maya is authentic or not, but it certainly isn’t your typical Mexican joint around the corner. Call it fusion, or traditional with a modern twist, Maya is an upscale restaurant serving refined mexi-Cali dishes. Breakfast burrito, papas con huevos, Mexican omelet, huevos con carne, baked frittata…all under 50 RMB, a great deal compared to the usually pricey dinner.

We started off with a bowl of homemade guacamole with chips. Fresh, rich, chunky, and served with an avocado core placed in the middle to prevent the guacamole from getting stale. There’s no other way to begin a meal at Maya.
