Bright, instagram-friendly cafe on South Xiangyang Road by cutiepie Camden Hauge of the Shanghai Supperclub. It serves all day breakfast, and as the name suggests, this place is quite egg-centric…even if the dish doesn’t already involve eggs, you have the option to “put an egg on it!” for 8RMB in addition. They also do a 10-seat chef’s table every Thursday evening which sounds like a fun and intimate experience.

襄陽北路上這家 Egg,我還在巴黎時就聽住在上海的外國朋友說了。老板是美國女孩 Camden Hauge,她的溫馨小店全天供應早餐,每道菜不是已經有了雞蛋,就是可以 “put an egg on it!”。Egg每周四還有僅限 10 人座的 chef’s table,每周的主廚不一樣,這個月會有 Madison 的 Austin Hu 和 Elefante 的 Carlos Sotomayor 來客串,聽起來會是兩個相當美味的聚餐。

The menu is short and the portions are not huge, so if you are with a group of 4 or more, it’s easy to simply order everything to share. That’s what I did on my first visit.

Egg 的菜色選擇並不多,而且份量偏小,如果是4-5個朋友來聚餐的話,很容易就可以嚐遍整個菜單。

Coconut cold brew (32 RMB) was surprisingly good – who would’ve thought that coconut water and coffee go well together?

Coconut cold brew(32元)是Egg自制的椰子冰咖啡,沒想到椰子水和咖啡居然還滿搭的,好喝。

Sweet Potato Okonomiyaki(45元)是大阪燒沒錯,不過 Camden 的版本裏面加了紅薯,有意思。

“Bec” (58 RMB): bacon egg + cheese, special sauce, pretzel bun.

Autumn “Shakshouka” (55 RMB): pumpkin, poached egg, feta, sage, brown butter, pepitas, toast. Not what you’d expect from a typical shakshouka made with tomatoes, chili peppers, onions and spiced with cumin, the version at Egg is very mild.

Autumn “Shakshouka”(55元)秋季中東煨菜,裏面有南瓜、水波蛋、菲達芝士、鼠尾草、焦黃油、南瓜籽、面包。 一般的 Shakshouka 的主要食材爲番茄、辣椒、洋蔥、而且會用孜然調味,應該是相當濃郁的一道菜,不過 Egg 的shakshouka非常清淡…個人覺得太清淡了些。

Chinese Chilaquiles (68 RMB): scallion pancake, braised pork, fried egg, luobogan. Liked this one a lot.

Chinese Chilaquiles(68元):中文菜單上翻譯是 “中式煎餅小吃”,碗裏有蔥油餅、手撕豬肉、煎蛋、蘿蔔乾。這是一道很受老外們歡迎的菜,不過中國人來吃可能會覺得不太值得?味道我是很喜歡的。

Hippie Bowl (55 RMB), barley, beet-pickled poached egg, kale, roast carrots, radish, feta, ras-el-hanout, dukkah…perhaps too healthy-tasting for me.

Hippie Bowl(55元)嬉皮沙拉:大麥、紅色蛋(甜菜根腌制過)、羽衣甘藍、烤胡蘿蔔、菲達芝士、白蘿蔔、中東香料(ras-el-hanout和dukkah)。吃起來太健康了,沒啥感覺。

I didn’t order Avocado Toast (55 RMB) since it’s something I make quite regularly at home, but it seems to be a very popular dish at the cafe.

Avcado Toast 牛油果吐司(55元)似乎是 Egg 很受歡迎的一道菜,不過我因爲在家常自己做這個,就沒有點了。

Cute little place. Pretty good cafe food with original twists, but I come here more for the comfortable space and friendly service. It gets very busy on weekends for brunch, so come early to secure a table especially you want that big one near the windows…Do know that there’s a bit of ventilation problem at Egg so you will smell like food when you leave this place.

Egg 的食物算不錯,不過其實我喜歡來這裏的原因是舒服的環境和服務。它的周末早午餐總是客滿而且不接受訂位,建議早點來,特別是如果你想要坐在窗戶旁邊那張漂亮的大木桌的話。還有 Egg 的排煙系統似乎有點問題,在這裡吃一頓飯出去後會有滿身的食物味…在意這點的人請小心。
