With good bakeries penetrating every neighborhood in Paris, there really is no need to travel for bread. However! There do exist a few exceptional boulangeries that are worth trekking across town for, Du Pain et Des Idées being one of them. This rustic and charming corner bakery is owned by Christophe Vasseur, who decided, at the age of 32, to make a career change from fashion to bread making. His insistence on using fresh ingredients and traditional methods results in remarkably delicious breads, and in 2008 Vasseur was named “best boulanger of Paris” by Gault & Millau and “boulanger of the year” by Guide Pudlo. Now how’s that for an inspirational story?

My bag of freshly acquired goodies.

L’escargot chocolat pistache (€2.5), chocolate pistachio snail. Crunchy, crispy, flaky layers wrapping pistachio paste and chocolate chips. Oh, my gosh, too good to be true. If only the pistachio flavor were even more prominent…

L’escargot au citron et nougat de Montélimar (€2.5), lemon and Montélimar nougat snail. Exceptional fragrance from the lemon and a lovely crunch from the nougat.

Le pain au chocolat banane (€2), chocolate croissant with fresh bananas. I’ve had plenty of good pains au chocolat in Paris, but the addition of fresh bananas made this particular one all the more memorable.

Le chausson à la pomme fraîche (€2), fresh apple turnover. Flaky puff pastry dough wrapping half of an apple, skin included. Just bursting with flavor!

Of course, I couldn’t have left Du Pain et Des Idées without a chunk of their signature loaf, le pain des amis (€4), which has a thick, toasty crust with an airy and chewy interior. I also sampled two of the mini-pavés (€1.3) – small rolls stuffed with savory combinations like spinach-chevres or prunes-bacon – and both were delicious.

Why yes, breads at Du Pain et Des Idées indeed do live up to their fame. Next time you are in the St. Martin Canal neighborhood, don’t forget to pick up a few loafs, and do take note that the shop is only open Monday to Friday.

Click here to see reviews from another visit, which turned out to be slightly disappointing.
