A new afternoon tea service at New Heights? Let’s give it a try.

The afternoon tea set (128 RMB), served in a glass house adjacent to the main dining room, includes two plates of sweet and savory bites, with a cup of coffee or tea.

On the savory plate, there are three finger sandwiches and a quiche. A few fancy ingredients are involved.

Mini baguette with parma ham, eggplant caviar, dried tomato, black olive

Mini bagel with smoked salmon, cucumber sauce, frisee salad

Sandwich with mimosa eggs, comte cheese and truffle

Quiche with crab and saffron

On the sweet plate, there’s scone with jam and cream, chestnut financier, mini opera cake, raspberry macaron, and a chocolate-covered strawberry.

The set itself was alright – nothing impressive, nothing atrocious. I must say though, that the tea cups used at New Heights are extremely ill-designed, resulting in water spilling all over our table. This definitely needs to be changed.

New Height’s high stools aren’t conducive to long hours of sitting and the tables seem inappropriately small for the large plates, so if ambiance is what you are looking for, try afternoon tea at the Park Hyatt instead.

Unfortunately it was drizzling on the day of my visit, otherwise New Height’s breezy terrace should be a pleasant stay.
