Last weekend I took some out-of-town friends to Café Dan, one of my natural go-to spots in Shanghai. This unpretentious little cafe serves up luxurious iced latte and Japanese comfort food that rarely disappoint. See my previous post for detailed introduction and more pictures.

We started the meal off with Dan’s famous iced latte (45 RMB), made with smooth, aromatic coffee and frothy milk that still bubbles as the latte is served to the table. Note that the ice-cubes are made from coffee so that the flavor isn’t diluted as the ice melts.

Mr. Choi is a tiny patisserie hidden inside the ASE Center, a new retail/restaurant complex next to Tianzifang. While the name is Korean, the patisserie is actually led by a Japanese pastry chef, who churns out cute little tidbits that have girls in Shanghai going head over heels. When we arrived on a Saturday afternoon, the small space was already packed. We were lucky to even snatch a seat on the outdoor patio, and felt even luckier when offered thick blankets to shield ourselves against the chilly February weather.

Since it was my first time at Mr. Choi, I naturally opted for the 8-piece mini cake collection to try as many varieties as possible. I was disappointed to find out that most items, despite their deceivingly cute appearances, were barely passable. The only one that I enjoyed was the caramel pudding, which was creamy and runny (in a good way), and the blueberry cheese tart was also quite agreeable. Everything else was mediocre.

NY Style Steak & Burger

Tel: 5465-1676
Hours: [Sun-Thu] 11:30am-11:00pm, [Fri-Sat] 11:00am-10:30pm
Price: 48-65 RMB/burger
For an artery-clogging but truly satisfying meal, go to NY Style Steak & Burger and order The Manhattan Monster. The beef patty itself is made with not much else other than good meat, and is accompanied by crisp bacon, cheddar cheese, fried egg, firehouse chili, onions rings (a little mountain of ‘em), lettuce, pickles, and tomato. Served with a side of fries, this burger will fill you up no matter how hungry you are.
Alley
The restaurant is slightly hard to find. If you know where Q’s Coffee is, just walk down the small alley to the right of it and you’ll arrive at NY Style Steak & Burger.

We tried The Manhattan Monster (65 RMB) and The Brooklyn BBQ (55 RMB), which were very similar in their architecture. I loved both almost equally, but if forced to choose, I would opt for the Monster for the firehouse chili and fried egg. As you can easily tell from the portion and ingredient list of these burgers, they are not ideal for the calorie counters.

Café Dan is small cafe in Tianzifang filled with an abundance of sunlight and the alluring aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Luxurious iced latte, desserts, and down-to-earth Japanese comfort foods that warm you up from the inside. Simply the best in Tianzifang, and might just be the best in Shanghai.

3rd floor, with a ladder leading up to the…rooftop?
Dan Cafe is a 3-story structure. The 1st floor has no seating area and seems to be filled with coffee and coffee brewing apparatus. After climbing the ridiculously steep and difficult stairs, you will arrive at the 2nd floor with half a dozen counter seats and a few 2-person tables that can be combined for bigger parties. The in-between floor and the 3rd floor have additional tables and tatami seating, but the space quickly fills up on a Saturday morning. We arrived before 11am to snatch the 2nd floor window seats because reservations are apparently not guaranteed.
The menus
The menus, both for drinks and food, are extensive. With so many appealing choices, even the most decisive minds can become irritatingly fickle. After perusing the menus for a good 20-minutes with plenty of flipping back and forth, we finally settled on the following dishes:
