Matto, the new pizzeria by JIA Hotel, has been generating a lot of buzz lately especially among my friends in the F&B industry. “Great food at reasonable prices” is the phrase I keep hearing. Time to trek across the river to give it a try?
“Matto” is a light-hearted term meaning ‘crazy’, ‘mad’ or ‘wild’, and this style is certainly reflected in the restaurant design. The interior is a blend of industrial and natural materials infused with a sense of play – the hand-sketched graphics and MATTO characters on the black walls both add a sense of fun and personality.

As the name suggests, Käfer by The Binjiang One is a collaboration between two entities, namely the BLN Restaurants & Caterings (most known for their Paulaner restaurants) and Germany dining brand Käfer. It’s located in a corner of Lujiazui that I’ve never ventured to before, and upon entering the airy restaurant, I was surprised to find it abuzz with a mix of local and foreign diners. The brunch deal here, 358 RMB for a free flow of wine and other drinks, an appetizer and dessert buffet, in addition to an all-you-can-eat a la carte menu, has apparently attracted quite a following.
The theme is contemporary European dining, though there are some Asian dishes on the a la carte menu as well as on the buffet table, presumably to cater to different types of guests. Green bean soup for dessert? It’s got to be a request from Chinese patrons.

I’m quite a fan of Park Hyatt’s afternoon tea set, but this time I went back to try their alluring array of à la carte desserts. Cream puffs, fresh fruit tarts, cheese cakes, mango puddings, chocolate mousse…ready for a sugar high afternoon?

Jin Xuan has been on the back of my mind ever since I had a delightful dim sum lunch there a while ago, and a friend’s birthday dinner brought us back to this opulent restaurant.

Though I’ve previously been to The Ritz-Carlton Pudong for lunch, afternoon tea, and spa, staying at one of its Bund View Suites with Club Lounge access was an experience on another luxurious level. For those who are unfamiliar with the hotel, here’s a quick overview: The Ritz-Carlton Pudong, opened in June 2010, is located on the top 18 floors of Shanghai’s IFC Tower – a luxury shopping/office/residential complex. It’s got 258 guest rooms, all in sleek and modern design with hints of Shanghai Art Deco from the 1930s, and I was able to see the inside of it for a birthday celebration!

After checking-in at the Club Lounge reception, we were shown to our Club Bund View Suite, a luxurious 807 square feet space. A combination of velvet fabrics in vivid colors and clear-cut geometric shapes, the design is simultaneously sharp and soft. As we entered the room, the curtains automatically opened to a sweeping view of the bund – an especially impressive welcome on a clear day.

…and he’s back! Those of you who have read this post know that Jean-Georges Vongerichten was in Shanghai 7 months ago and demo’ed three dishes to an eager audience. This time, he has returned with his latest cookbook, “Home Cooking with Jean Georges: My Favorite Simple Recipes” and showcased yet another 4 of his delicious creations. What I loved most about this particular cooking class – the dishes are actually simple enough to be recreated at home. Gasp. Can you really cook like Jean-Georges Vongerichten?

It was a full house when I visited Aura on a Saturday afternoon. The atmosphere was perfectly vivacious – not so quiet that I felt obligated to mute my conversations, but not so loud that it felt clamorous in the least bit. With soothing live jazz permeating the air, gracious waitresses and waiters waltzing around, and a commanding view of Lujiazui and the Bund (needless to say…) – I knew this is a place worth lingering.

The Ritz-Carlton Afternoon Tea Set (268 RMB + 15%) is a traditional three-tier affair. Though it’s designed for one person only, the abundance of food is enough to satisfy two people. Smaller sets and a la carte options are also available.

Every five-star hotel has its own version of the traditional English High Tea, but Flair Rooftop Restaurant & Bar at the Ritz-Carlton Pudong is doing something quite uniquely Asian. Prawn dumplings and California roll? Yes ma’am, they’ve got them. Let’s take a look at what else is on the plate.
